Last Thursday night thousands of students from different universities poured into Bogotá’s main square Plaza Bolívar. Torches lit up the Andean night and the protestors filled the stairs leading up to the congress building with chants, banderoles and bonfires. It was a rehearsal for this week’s Toma de Bogotá (Conquest of Bogotá) when students from all over Colombia will take over the capital and camp on Plaza Bolívar. Trade unions are joining the mobilizations and the teacher’s union Fecode announced that they will start a nationwide campaign for a referendum that would make all education free of charge.
